Rajasthan has been the hub of carpets and there is a huge demand for Indian carpets in the international market. Carpet weaving was introduced to India in the 16th century by Mughal emperor Akbar. He used to call weavers from Persia to make carpets for his palace.
According to a report by Mordor Intelligence, almost 90 percent of Indian carpets are exported abroad. The estimated shipment value from April to November 2019 is INR 64,407 Cr ($916 million). This figure really reflects the huge consumer demand and market for primary carpets.
Carpets can be made in many ways, but Indian carpet manufacturers mainly use hand-tufted and hand-knotted methods. The hand-tufted method is a modern method, while the hand-knotted process has been used since ancient times. The carpet is first designed on graph paper. Then the manufacturer, using the graph paper, outlines the carpet design on the fabric. The threads are then dyed, and the carpet is tufted using a tufting gun. If the carpet is made using the hand knotting method, it is done by special handlooms that weave it according to the knotting requirements.
A hand knotted carpet takes six to seven weeks to be ready, while a hand woven carpet takes 14 to 16 weeks to be ready.
India is facing heavy competition from countries like China, Turkey, and the US, which specialize in machine-made carpets, but still, Indian handmade carpets have their own international appeal. You can find different types of carpet flooring and many carpet manufacturers in India. India is famous because here you get carpets at very reasonable prices.
